Some Carriers Resorting to West Coast Surcharges After All

Some of the carriers that suspended their congestion surcharges last week for US West Coast ports have decided to push forward with their plans and introduce surcharges starting on or after November 26th.

Port Surcharge to begin November 26th, 2014

Latest news on the Port Congestion Surcharge front is that certain carriers are intending to implement the surcharge for cargo received on and after 11-26-2014. This follows the suspension notices that carriers had been sending out earlier this week. MSC was the first carrier to announce their intentions.

In contrast to their first attempt, the surcharge is now being based on "Cargo Receiving Date" of 11-26-2014 and after rather than ETA or date of discharge. The charge schedule remains the same and is hereunder:

USD 20/CBM for LCL

USD 800 per 20' Container

USD 1,000 per 40' Container

USD 1,125 per 40' High Cube Container

USD 1,266 per 45' High Cube Container

At the moment, we are still gathering more information from the carriers. So far four carriers have signaled their intentions, though we expect more information to be released in the coming days.
